Constipation (kabz) is a very common digestive disorder which may affect people of all age group. In fact, constipation is a condition of bowel in which movements are infrequent. Or defecation is painful or evacuation is incomplete.
Main cause of constipation may be diet; it may occur due to low-fiber intake or low liquid intake. Other common causes may be hormonal disorder (like hypothyroidism) and side effects of medication. Decreased physical activity and rarely heavy metal toxicity may be other reasons. Constipation is a symptom, not a disease therefore for its treatment, it is necessary to treat cause not symptom. In most of the cases, the cause of constipation is primary that can be treated naturally by changing lifestyle. However, we can also apply some natural remedies, if necessary.
Natural Remedies for Constipation:
1. Jaggery and Ginger:
To cure constipation, grate a small piece of ginger (after peeling) and mix some old jaggery in it to make its ball. Now, chew this ball after dinner; it improves bowel movement and prevents constipation.
2. Fennel Seeds for Constipation:
If you are suffering from mild constipation, take one spoon of fennel seeds (saunf) powder and 2 spoons Gulkand and ingest it after one hour from lunch daily.
Caution: Diabetics should not try this remedy because of Gulkand.
3. Soda with Lemon:
Soda with lemon (nimbu) can cure constipation; it helps in bowel movement by cleaning the intestines.
- At first, add ¼ glass soda water in ¾ glass water.
- Then, mix some drops of lemon juice, a pinch of black salt and some roasted cumin seeds powder in it.
- Now, consume this drink after meal.
4. Ripe Papaya for Kabz:
If you have constipation, you should increase fiber intake in your daily diet. In other words, you should eat more fruits and vegetables instead of grains. Papaya (papita) is an amazing and all season fruit which is full of fiber. Eat one bowl ripe papaya daily; it works as a natural laxative (1) and has no side effect. Moreover, unripe papaya is also good, cook it as vegetable and consume.
5. Coconut Water for Kabz:
Coconut water (nariyal pani) is good to cure any type of stomach related problem. For treating constipation (kabz), drink coconut water three times in a day.
6. Raisin (Munakka) for Constipation:
Raisin (munakka) is a wonder produc.; It works as a natural laxative and prevent constipation. You can use munakka in different ways –
- Raisin with Milk:
- Munakka (Raisins) with rock salt:
- Raisins with Amaltas and Figs (decoction):
- Raisins with Cumin Seeds (Chutney):
7. Haritaki with Black Cardamom:
Harad (terminalia chebula) is an important herb that is good for all digestive problems. It also works as a natural laxative. Take powder of harad with black cardamom at night with lukewarm water. (To know about the detailed recipe, read ‘Haritaki or harad: Health recipes’.
8. Harad with Baheda:
Badi harad (Yellow Chebulic Myrobalan) is quite good to cure constipation without medicine. Prepare its powder with terminalia belerica (baheda) and rock sugar (mishri) and ingest before going to bed. (Read ‘‘Haritaki or harad: Health recipes’’ for complete recipe.)
9. Figs for Kabz:
Fig (anjeer) is very rich in fiber; it cures constipation amazingly. Simply, soak 3-4 dried figs in some water for 2 hours and eat at night. You can use both fresh and dried figs. But, because fresh figs are not available around the year, so it is better to use dried figs.
10. Isabgol for Constipation:
Psyllium or Isabgol dust is a natural and harmless laxative. Whenever you have constipation, soak 5-10 gm isabgol in water for some time and consume it with equal amount of mishri at night. Or you can also take Isabgol dust directly with water at night. But don’t forget to drink a good amount of fluids; otherwise it may develop intestinal obstruction, especially in long-term use of such laxatives. (3)
11. Castor Oil for Kabz:
Castor oil is a safe laxative, even for small children. It helps to stimulate the colon and clear the motion. (2) You can take it (1-4 tbsp) with one cup lukewarm water or milk at night. Dose may vary from person to person. However, 1-4 tablespoons Castor oil is enough. (For adults – 2-4 tsp and for children – 1 tsp)
12. Baking Soda:
Baking soda is a great solution of curing different stomach problems including constipation. Simply, mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with ¼ cup of lukewarm water and consume the liquid as quickly as you can. It gives relief very quickly.
All the above mentioned natural home remedies are quite safe and have no side effects. But the results may vary from person to person. If you are allergic to any ingredient or it does not suit you, stop it immediately.
