Constipation or Kabj:
Constipation (kabj) is a very common digestive disorder which refers to bowel movements. It may affect people of all age group. It is a condition of bowel in which movements are infrequent or defecation is painful or evacuation is incomplete. Its causes may be congenital, primary, and secondary; most common cause is primary and not life threatening.
Common causes of constipation (kabj) may be diet (low-fibre diet, low liquid intake), hormonal disorder (like hypothyroidism), side effects of medication, decreased physical activity and rarely heavy metal toxicity. Constipation is a symptom, not a disease therefore for its treatment, it is necessary to treat cause not symptom. In most of the cases, the cause of constipation is primary that can be treated naturally by changing life style and if necessary we can apply some natural remedies.
Natural Remedies of Constipation (Kabj):
1. Jaggery and Ginger:
Most simple natural remedy for constipation (kabj) is old jaggery (gur) and ginger. Take a piece of ginger (adrak), grate it after peeling and mix some old jaggery (gur) to make a ball. Chew this ball after dinner; it improves bowel movement and prevents constipation (kabj).
2. Fennel Seeds & Gulkand:
If you are suffering from mild constipation (kabj), take one spoon of fennel seeds (saunf) powder and 2 spoons Gulkand and ingest it after one hour from lunch daily. This is a simple and safe home remedy. Diabetics should not try this remedy because of Gulkand.
3. Soda with Lemon:
Soda with (nimbu) can cure constipation (kabj); drink soda water with lemon juice, black salt (kala namak) and cumin seeds (jeera) after meal. Take ¾ glass water, add ¼ glass soda water and mix some drops of lemon juice, a pinch of black salt and some roasted cumin seeds powder in it; drink this after meal. It helps in bowel movement by cleaning the intestines.
4. Ripe Papaya for Kabj:
If you have constipation, you should eat more fruits and vegetables to increase fibre intake. Papaya (papita) is an amazing and all season fruit which is full of fibre. Eat one bowl ripe papaya daily; it works as a natural laxative and has no side effect. Unripe papaya is also good, cook it as vegetable and consume.
5. Coconut Water for Kabj:
Coconut water (nariyal pani) also helps in bowel movement. It is good to cure any type of stomach related health problem. For treating constipation or kabj, drink coconut water three times in a day
6. Raisin or Munakka for Constipation:
To get relief from constipation (kabj), raisin or munakka is a wonder product; it works as a natural laxative.To cure constipation, you can use raisins (munakka) in different ways-
a. Take 10-20 raisins (munakka), remove its seeds and boil in 200 gm of milk thoroughly. Then drink this warm milk and eat the raisins. It works as a natural laxative and prevent constipation (kabj).
b. If you have problem of constipation (kabj), take 10-15 raisins (munakka) roast them with ghee and add a pinch of rock salt (sendha namak). Eat these raisins (munakka) at night before going to sleep.
c. To cure old constipation (kabj), at first, collect all the following ingredients –
Raisins (munakka) 10 piece
Figs (anjeer) 5 pieces
Fennel seeds (saunf) 3 gm
Amaltas ka guda 3 gm
Rose flower leaves 3 gm
After cleaning all the ingredients with water, boil all the ingredients in a glass of water till it reduces half. Let it to be cool and drink after sieving at night for 5-7 days.
d. Raisins chutney is also a good solution of curing constipation. Simply collect- raisins (munakka)- 7, black pepper corns (kali mirch)- 5, cumin seeds (jeera) 10 gm, rock salt (sendha namak) 6 gm and a pinch of (500 mg) citric acid (Tatri) and grind them to make chutney. Now, lick this chutney 2-3 times to improve bowel movement. It is also helpful in nausea.
7. Black Chebulic Myrobalan, Cardamom, & Black Pepper:
Harad is a beneficial herb that is good for digestive problems. It also works as a natural laxative.
- Take 50 gm of Black Chebulic Myrobalan (Chhoti harad) and roast on a pan over heat slightly.
- Similarly, take 25 gm of black cardamom (badi elaichi) and roast on a pan slightly (for 1-2 minutes). Then remove the peel to separate the seeds.
- Likewise, collect 10 gm black pepper (kali mirch) and roast slightly.
- Grind all the three ingredients to make fine powder.
- Ingest ¼ to ½ tea spoon powder at night with lukewarm water. This is a traditional home remedy for constipation (kabj) that has no known side effect.
8. Yellow Chebulic Myrobalan & Terminalia Belerica:
Badi harad ( Yellow Chebulic Myrobalan) is also quite effective to cure constipation naturally.
- At first, collect 25 gm of Yellow Chebulic Myrobalan (badi Harad) and remove its rind with the help of pestle.
- Similarly, take 50 gm of Terminalia Belerica (Baheda) and remove its rind.
- Then grind all the ingredients to make fine powder.
- Add 40 gm of mishri (rock sugar or sugar candy) powder in it and keep it into a jar.
- Now, consume ¼ tea spoon of powder before going to sleep at night with lukewarm water.
- This powder helps to improve the bowel movement and clears the constipation.
9. Figs (Anjeer) for Constipation:
Dry Fig or anjeer is a dry fruit that also works as natural laxative to treat chronic constipation (kabj). Figs are very rich in fibre. In chronic constipation, soak 3-4 dried figs in some water for 2 hours and eat it at night. You can use both fresh and dried figs but fresh figs are not available around the year, so it is better to use dried figs (anjeer).
10. Isabgol or Psyllium:
Psyllium or Isabgol dust is a natural and harmless laxative. If you have constipation (kabj), soak 5-10 gm psyllium or isabgol in water for some time and consume it with equal amount of mishri at night. Or you can take Isabgol dust directly with water at night.
11. Castor Oil for Constipation:
Castor oil (arandi ka tel) is a safe laxative; it can be applied even on small children. It can be taken mixing with one cup lukewarm water or milk at night. Castor oil (arandi ka tel) helps to stimulate the colon and clear the motion. Dose may vary from person to person; 1-4 table spoons Castor oil (mixing with milk or water) is enough. Adult dose is 2-4 spoons and for children 1 tea spoon is sufficient. Castor oil is known as a traditional home remedy for curing constipation (kabj).
12. Baking Soda:
Baking soda is a great solution of curing different health problems including constipation (kabj). Simply, mix 1 tea spoon of baking soda with ¼ cup of lukewarm water and consume the liquid as quickly as you can. It helps to get relief from kabj and stomach pain too.
All the above mentioned natural home remedies are quite safe and have no side effects but results may vary person to person. So if you are allergic to any ingredient or it does not suit you, stop immediately. Required ingredients are available on grocery shops or super market like big bazaar, D-Mart etc.
