Knee pain (ghutno ka dard) is a very common medical condition that occurs due to fractures, ligament injuries, dislocation of the knee joint and wear and tear due to ageing. Today more than 40% population of world is affected from knee pain. According to World Health Organization, approximately 20% urban population of 30 years plus age group is suffering from knee pain problem; among them, ratio of women is greater than men.
Though doctor’s consultation is necessary in these problems for proper diagnosis and treatment, there are some simple and easy natural remedies which are proven to be helpful to cure this knee pain either it is mild or moderate.
Natural Remedies of Knee Pain:
1. Cinnamon for Knee Pain:
To cure your knee pain without medicine, take one tsp cinnamon powder, one tbsp honey and two tablespoon lukewarm water and mix them. Give light massage with this paste to the affected knee joint or any other joint. Cinnamon will control your joint pain within minutes.
2. Milk Kadha to Cure Knee Pain:
To control the pain of knee joint due to arthritis and gout, this home remedy works as a natural painkiller.
Milk 1 glass
Water 1 glass
Cinnamon (Dalchini) 1 tsp
Chebulic Myrobalan (Chhoti Harad) 1 tsp
Dry Ginger Powder (Sonth) 1 tsp
Green Cardamom (Chhoti Elaichi) 4 pods
Garlic (Lahsun) 3 cloves
Grind all the ingredients to make fine powder and peel garlic clove. Boil milk and water with all the above ingredients till it reduces to half. Then drink this mixture lukewarm at night and chew garlic cloves also.
3. Tulsi to Cure Knee Pain:
To cure knee pain, take equal quantity of basil leaves, stems, seeds & root, crush them thoroughly and dry it in shadow. Mix it with old jaggery (gur) after sieving; take 6 gm of this powder twice a day (morning & evening) with milk. Every part of Tulsi (Basil) is very good to cure any joint pain. To get better results, use goat milk instead of normal milk.
If you have nerve pain, use ‘tulsi kadha’ or basil juice.
To make Tulsi kadha, boil 12-15 basil leaves in one cup of water till it reduced to half and drink it 2 -3 times in a day.
To make Tulsi or basil juice, crush 10-15 basil leaves, extract it juice with the help of thin cloth and consume at morning.
Tips for Basil Use-
Basil is an excellent herb if you take it orally in a limited dose for a short period. Though there is not enough researches regarding its long term usage side effects, but better to stay on safe side and use up to 4-6 weeks. Basil contains Estragole which is not harmful in the form of leaves. Estragole percentage is high in its oil, therefore it is not advisable to ingest basil oil. However you can apply it topically because basil is a good anti-inflammatory and muscles- relaxant natural drug. Pregnant women and lactating mothers should not take it because it is warm in nature and may be harmful.
4. Aloe Vera Pulp for Knee Pain:
Aloe vera (Ghritkumari in Hindi) is a medicinal plant; it is good to cure arthritis. Take 10 gm of aloe vera pulp twice in a day (morning and evening) after peeling the outer layer.
Moreover, use a leaf of aloe vera to remove swelling on knee joint. Simply, peel aloe vera leaf from one side and put some turmeric powder on it. Keep it on flame for 30 seconds (lukewarm) and tie on the affected joint; you will get relief within half an hour.
Tips for Aloe vera Use:
Aloe vera is quite safe when applied topically (over skin) for reducing inflammation and pain. While taking aloe juice, caution is advised in some cases, such as- diabetes or hypoglycemia, bleeding disorders, kidney disease, liver disease, and pregnancy. It may lower blood sugar level and in that case, needs dosage adjustment. Likewise in other problems also dosage monitoring is required. If someone is allergic to aloe vera (Ghritkumari in Hindi), it may cause stomach cramping, skin reaction or constipation. So, it is advisable to use it cautiously; if you face any such problem, consult to the expert.
5. Ginger for Knee Pain:
Ginger (adrak) has anti inflammatory properties that helps to reduce swelling and pain of knee and other joints. It contains phytonutrients- Gingerols and shogoals which help to reduce swelling and pain and fight against cartilage destruction. Recent researches showed the positive effect of extract of ginger in reducing swelling and pain of joints.
How to Use Ginger for Knee Pain:
A. Ginger can be used in extract form or in oil form. You can also take ginger capsules as supplements for good results. Or you can give light massage with ginger juice (one tablespoon) mixing with sesame oil (Til ka tel) on the affected joint.
B. To cure knee joint pain without painkiller, cut 10 gm of ginger in small pieces after peeling. Eat them after deep frying into cow’s ghee. However, you can take crushed ginger (1 tbsp) with honey too as a first thing in the morning. It will reduce inflammation and pain in your knee due to arthritis.
C. Ginger with Turmeric Root:
Ginger root with fresh turmeric root juice treats knee pain due to arthritis more effectively. Fresh turmeric root remains available in vegetable market during winter.
- Grate a small piece of ginger and extract its juice.
- Similarly, grate turmeric root piece and extract its juice.
- Now, mix 1 tsp ginger juice and 1 tsp turmeric root juice in a glass of warm water and leave it for 5 minutes.
- Then add ½ tsp of black pepper powder, stir it well and drink.
Tips for Ginger Use:
Ginger is a well known herb which is used in many Ayurvedic drugs. It is possibly safe either it is taken by mouth or applied locally on skin appropriately. But some people may have some mild side effects like- heartburn, stomach discomfort or some allergic reactions. Because it is a herb of hot nature, not safe for pregnant ladies. However, excessive use of ginger is not safe; it is an excellent spice that has lots of health benefits, but use it cautiously.
6. Ajmoda, Harad & Sonth:
Celery (ajmoda) has anti-inflammatory properties; it also acts as a diuretic and helps to remove uric acid crystals that build up around the joints of body. Likewise, black chebulic myrobalan (chhoti harad) and dry ginger also have anti inflammatory properties that helps to cure pain due to arthritis and gout.
Celery seeds (ajmoda) 15 gm
Dry Ginger (Sonth) 25 gm
Chebulic Myrobalan (Chhoti Harad) 100 gm
- Collect all the three ingredients and grind one by one to make fine powder.
- Then, mix well and keep into an air tight jar.
- Take 3-4 gm of this powder with lukewarm water twice a day (morning & evening).
7. Carrot Juice for Knee Pain :
Daily consumption of one cup carrot (gajar) juice strengthens bones, remove swelling of joints and cures joint pain slowly but steadily. It is a tested natural remedy of joint pain, only needs to have belief and patience and not to discontinue the use of carrot juice. There is not any known side effect of carrot.
8. Flax seeds to Cure Knee Pain:
Flax seed (alsi) is the richest source of Omega-3, and a good source of vitamin B6, Iron, potassium, copper and zinc. It helps to reduce stiffness and inflammation of joints. Take 200 gm of flax seeds and crush them (don’t make powder) and keep in an airtight jar. Eat 10 gm of crushed flax seeds with breakfast or lunch daily.
9. Fenugreek Seeds for Knee Pain:
Fenugreek seed is a medicinal herb that has anti-inflammatory properties. This is the easiest home remedy to get rid from aching knees and other joints. To control knee pain, soak 2 tsp fenugreek seeds (methi) and 2 tsp cumin seeds (jeera) in 1 cup of water at night; consume this water in the morning with empty stomach.
Moreover, you can give massage to your knee joint with fenugreek seeds (methi) paste mixing with mustard oil; it reduces swelling and pain.
10. Cayenne Pepper Oil Massage:
Pepper is a natural pain reliever. It increases blood flow and works well in controlling knee pain.
Add ½ tsp cayenne pepper powder in 1 cup olive oil; mix it well and apply directly on the knee joint. Wash your hands after use. Olive oil and cayenne pepper, both have anti-inflammatory properties and are excellent to reduce inflammation.
11. Turmeric Paste for Knee Pain:
Turmeric (haldi) is good to reduce pain, inflammation and stiffness. Many studies proved its effectiveness; turmeric has an active ingredient called- curcumin, which has been proven to be good to cure inflammatory diseases. If you have pain in your knees and don’t want to take any inflammatory or pain relieving drug, try it. You can take a very little quantity of turmeric (1-3 gm) with milk to control pain and swelling of knee. It can also be used externally by applying (turmeric paste) on the aching knee.
12. Apple Cider Vinegar to Cure Knee Pain:
Apple cider vinegar has alkalising effect; it has been used as a traditional home remedy for arthritis since ancient era. Though there is no scientific evidence of its effectiveness, but it showed good results to reduce swelling and pain of knee joint.
It is rich in enzymes and acids that helps to increase the absorption of calcium essential to healthy joints into the body. Take 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar with equal amount of honey, mixing with herbal tea or water daily. By following this remedy for few weeks, you will get relief in your knee pain and stiffness. It also helps to lubricate knee joint and improve mobility.
Moreover, apple cider vinegar is a good diuretic and laxative that helps to eliminate toxins from the body.
Besides drinking apple cider vinegar, you can apply it topically on knee joint. You can use its packs on knee joint or use it with your bath water (2 cups); or you can add 1 cup of apple cider vinegar in lukewarm water and soak your legs in this water before going to bed for 30 minutes. This will help in reducing morning stiffness.
Tips and Caution:
Apple cider vinegar may cause stomach irritation for some people, especially when you take it at high concentration. Better to use organic, raw, unfiltered, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar. Use it with honey, diluting with water or herbal tea. But start it with smaller dosage and gradually increase the dosage. Apple cider vinegar can damage teeth enamel, if it comes to direct contact of teeth. Therefore use a straw to minimize contact with teeth.
13. Castor Oil Massage for Knee Pain:
Castor oil is rich in anti-inflammatory properties and commonly used to treat joint pain. It contains ricinoleic acid – a unique fatty acid that is good to treat some diseases. Castor oil and Castor oil packs are often used to remove joint inflammation and muscle pain; besides, it also improve blood circulation in the body.
Give a gentle massage with warm Castor oil on the swollen knee joint; as soon as the skin absorbs Castor oil, you will get relief in swelling and pain in knee or other joint. Castor oil is also good for sore muscles and inflamed nerves.
How to make Massage with Castor Oil:
You can also use Castor oil packs for reducing inflammation and pain of knee joint. Soak a cotton cloth in warm Castor oil, squeeze out the excess oil and then place it on the affected joint for some time. For better results, apply a heating pad on the soaked cloth. You can use the Castor oil packs for multiple times. Store it into a zip-lock bag and replace it with new one after 4-5 days.
All the above ingredients-honey (shahad), cinnamon (dalchini), dry ginger (sonth), Chebulic Myrobalan (chhoti harad), celery seeds (ajmoda), green cardamom (elaichi) and flax seeds (alsi), castor oil, apple cider vinegar- can be purchased from grocery shop or super market like big bazaar, D-mart etc. Carrot, ginger (adarak) and garlic (lahsun) remain available in vegetable market all around the year.
All the ingredients used in above said natural remedies are part of our day to day life. There is not any known side effects of these remedies, until and unless you are not allergic to any ingredient.
