Toothache, a pain in and around the tooth, is a common problem that may affect any person. Generally, the reason behind this is the cavity which damages teeth. This cavity is caused by bacteria remain in the mouth on the sweet or starchy food. If you do not clean your teeth properly after eating sweets, chocolate etc., it may cause cavity. Cavity produces acids and the acids start decaying the tooth. When the damage reaches to nerve or vein, toothache starts. This toothache (Dant dard) ranges from minor sensitivity to acute pain. Sometimes it becomes so painful that you feel discomfort even in your forehead also because all these parts are inter-connected.
Whenever you have toothache, you should consult your dentist because the dentist can tell you the actual reason of the pain. But every time it is not possible to go to dentist because either the pain is mild or it is not possible to contact dentist immediately. Therefore it is better to know about some home remedies which can control toothache or ‘dant dard’ immediately. However, these remedies are primary steps, not solutions but they give timely relief from pain.
Natural Remedies of Toothache:
1. Clove for Toothache:
Clove (laung) is very good to control toothache (Dant dard). If you have pain in your tooth, take only one clove and put it on the aching tooth by pressing with nearby tooth. Clove is a natural antibacterial spice; it works quickly and as a result, controls toothache immediately.
Moreover, one can use clove oil (laung ka tel) in place of clove which remains available in every medicine shop. Simply, take one drop on a small cotton pad and put on the affected tooth; you will get relief within few minutes. Clove oil is strong enough, hence put it on the aching tooth only. Because if it touches to the gums, you may have burning sensation.
2. Mustard Oil and Rock Salt:
To give massage, put 2 gm rock salt on your palm and add mustard oil (four times of salt) in it. Now, give light massage with mustard oil (by slanting your palm). At last, put remaining rock salt powder paste on your teeth and wash your mouth with lukewarm water immediately.

3. Gargles with Alum Water:
Alum is a natural antiseptic and is very effective to treat toothache; simply gargle with alum water for instant relief. For gargling, mix a pinch of alum (fitkari) powder in a glass of lukewarm water. Then, gargle with this water for 3-4 times in a day.
In the same way, you can use salt in place of alum. Gargling with salt water (1 tsp in a glass of water) also gives relief because salt helps to remove the swelling of gum.
4. Garlic for Toothache:
Garlic, a type of veggie, is commonly used for cooking purpose. Do you know, it can also control toothache within few minutes. If you have pain, simply crush a garlic clove (lahsun) after peeling and mix some salt in it. Then hold it in your mouth by pressing on the aching tooth for few minutes to control the pain.
5. Turmeric (Haldi) Powder:

Just take 1 tsp turmeric powder and make thick paste with the help of water. Then, keep the paste on a small cotton pad and hold it in your mouth on the aching tooth directly. 6. Baking Soda:
If you have toothache and you don’t want to take medicine for it, simply apply baking soda. It is a good home remedy to control pain. Firstly, make paste of one spoon baking soda with water and put it on a cotton pad. Then simply hold this cotton pad on the aching tooth for few minutes by pressing with other tooth. It will control your pain within few minutes. You can repeat it if needed; there is no harm of this home remedy.
Another way of using baking soda is to make gargle with it. Simply, take a cup of lukewarm water and mix 1 tsp baking soda in this water and gargle for 3-4 times in a day.
7. Onion for Toothache:
To control toothache, apply onion juice on the affected tooth; its anti-microbial properties helps to cure pain naturally. At first, extract some juice of onion and mix some salt in it. Then dip a small cotton pad into onion juice and put it on the aching tooth directly.
Another way of using onion (pyaj) is to use crushed onion directly in place of onion juice. Simply, crush a small piece of onion and put into the mouth by pressing on the aching tooth for few minutes. You will get certainly relief in your toothache.
8. Hydrogen Peroxide:
To control toothache (Dant dard), simply dip a small cotton pad in hydrogen peroxide and put it on the aching tooth directly for few minutes. It is too good to get relief from pain. But while using this natural remedy, you should take extra precaution. Don’t swallow its saliva, and spit it outside.
9. Basil Juice for Toothache:
Basil is an amazing herb which is too good to cure various health problems. If you have pain in your tooth, try basil (tulsi) juice directly on the tooth. Firstly, crush some basil leaves (15-20) and extract the juice with the help of sieve. Put this juice on a cotton pad with a little amount of black pepper (kali mirch) powder and then press this cotton pad below (or above) the aching tooth. You will get relief definitely.
10. Asafoetida for Toothache:
Asafoetida is an amazing spice that is used to cure different health problems without medicine. If you have pain in your tooth, make a thick paste of a little amount of asafoetida (heeng) and put this on a cotton pad. Then hold this pad in your mouth by pressing below (or above) the aching tooth for few minutes.
11. Raw Potato for Toothache:
Potato is very effective in toothache, especially in case of abscessed tooth. In abscessed tooth, pus accumulates in and around the tooth that causes swelling and acute pain. Normally, a dentist does root canal for this. If you have toothache due to abscess, try potato remedy. Firstly, cut a small slice of raw potato (aloo) after washing it properly and put it inside your mouth against an abscess; left it for at least one hour. If needed, you can put it for more time. It will help to drain the pus and reduce the swelling from the abscess. Likewise, you can repeat it again if needed.
Potato is considered to have some antiseptic properties that help accelerate healing. The alkaline nature of potato (aloo) juice and its potassium content play an important role in healing an abscess. It can clean the infected area. With enough potassium, the nerves and cells can repair and begin to function properly.
12. Leaves of Mango Tree:
Mango leaves have lots of health benefits; it also help to control toothache. Simply, chew some fresh leaves and spit them. Or, you can apply its ash on the aching tooth to get relief from pain.
13. Leaves of Guava Tree:
Guava tree leaves have antibacterial properties; one can control toothache by chewing fresh guava leaves. If you have toothache, chew fresh guava leaves after washing with water thoroughly. Remember, you have to chew the leaves only and spit its saliva outside.
Likewise, one can use leaves of guava tree for gargling. Simply, boil some leaves in some water and let it to be cool. Gargle with this lukewarm water after adding some salt. Repeat it for 3-4 times in a day.
14. Ginger for Toothache:
If you have toothache, take a small piece of ginger (adrak) and crush it. Now, hold it in your mouth by pressing over the aching tooth. Ginger juice has anti-inflammatory properties that helps to cure tooth pain.
15. Vicks for Toothache:
Vicks is a common item that remains available in every house. Do you know, vicks can control tooth pain. Simply, rub a little amount of ‘Vicks vapor rub’ on the face outside to the aching tooth and cover it with a cotton cloth or handkerchief for some time. You will get relief certainly.
Remember, you have to put vicks on cheek (outside the aching tooth), not on the tooth directly.
