Cloves or Laung:

Cloves or laung are aromatic flower buds of an evergreen tree in the family of Myrtaceae from which oil is also extracted. Clove is one of the costliest spices, commonly used in the cuisines for its fragrance.

Flower buds of clove (laung) tree are initially pale in colour which gradually turn into green. Finally, they transit into bright-red clove buds at the time of harvesting. An oil is also extracted from the clove plant, called clove oil.

Cloves are the native of Maluku islands in Indonesia and primarily harvested in almost all Asian countries like- India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. Clove is available throughout the year.

Laung or clove has antiseptic, antioxidant , anti-inflammatory, carminative and anti-flatulent properties. It also has minerals such as- iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, zinc and sodium. Clove is a good source of vitamin C, B6, B12, vitamin A, E, D and K, riboflavin and niacin.

Clove is not only used as a spice but also as a medicine to cure many health problems. It is used in Ayurvedic medicines, Chinese Medicines, Western Herbals and Dentistry since ancient era. It is an important ingredient used to cure various health problems. Clove oil is used in preparation of some toothpaste.

Best Health Benefits of Laung or Clove:

1. Cures Toothache:

Cloves or Laung

Cloves (laung) are natural pain killer which is used as primary medicine of toothache. Simply, take one clove and put it on the affected tooth for some times.

In addition to that, clove oil, eugenol – works as an antiseptic and pain reliever; it helps in curing toothache (dant ka dard). It works as local anaesthetic and antiseptic for teeth and gum. (For more details, also read “Toothache Natural Remedies”.)

2. Control Bad Breath:

Clove or laung also controls bad breath; keep one clove in your mouth and chew it. Clove starts its work in few minutes. Simultaneously, boil a clove in some water and gargle with this water 2-3 times a day.

3. Cures Headache:

Clove or laung is also effective in controlling headache, especially headache due to tension. Take some coconut oil into a bowl, mix 8-10 drops of clove oil in it. Now give head massage with this oil; you will feel coolness and headache will be disappeared.

4. Improves Digestion:

Clove also helps in digestion of food. It promotes an increase in digestive enzymes. Take one clove and one green cardamom (chhoti elaichi) after every meal. It helps in digesting food and controls gas formation and acidity.

5. Good for Cough & Cold:

Cloves are used in Ayurvedic medicines of cold and cough. Its aroma is so strong that you can get relief in cold only by taking its smell. Put 2-3 drops of clove oil (laung ka tel) in a cotton handkerchief and take its smell. Or boil 4-5 cloves in a cup of water and drink this water to control thrice a day; you will get relief within few hours.

To cure chronic cough, roast few pods of clove on heat directly. Grind them and ingest a pinch of clove powder with honey 2-3 times in a day. It is very good to control whooping cough (kukur khansi) too.

6. Removes Toxins:

Cloves are richest source of anti oxidants such as- anthocyanins and quercetin. They help to remove toxins from the body if you use one clove with green cardamom daily after meal.

7. Inflammation of Joints:

Clove also contains a variety of flavonoids. Its oil has anti inflammatory properties which helps to remove inflammation of joints and controlling pain.

  • Add one spoon of clove oil in 2-3 spoons of coconut (nariyal) or sesame (til ka tel) oil.
  • Now massage the joints gently to reduce inflammation and pain.
  • Or grind some cloves to make paste and apply this paste on the aching joint; aroma therapists use clove oil to treat arthritis and rheumatism.

8. Clears Throat Infection:

Clove has an essential oil- eugenol- that can help to relieve cough cold and sore throat also. Boil some water in a pan and put 2-3 drops of clove oil in the water. Then inhale the steam of this clove oil by covering the head with a towel.

9. Controls Vomiting:

Cloves are also used to control vomiting. Take a pinch of clove powder, add some honey and swallow it. It is also useful in motion sickness (nausea and vomiting during pregnancy).

10. Releases Mental Fatigue:

Clove oil is used as mental refresher tonic. Rub some drops on your forehead to release stress and mental fatigue. It works within minutes surprisingly.

Alternatively, you can make a flavored tea by adding clove, mint (pudina), basil (tulsi patti) and green cardamom (chhoti elaichi) in water. Boil it and take it along with honey to release stress and mental fatigue.

If you are getting tired due to hectic full day work out and feeling tensed and impatient, apply only one drop of clove oil on your wrist. Simultaneously, rub one drop clove oil mixing with some olive oil on your forehead too. It will release your fatigue and headache and help you to sleep better.

11. Good to Cure Stomach Gas:

Whenever you feel stomach gas, boil half glass of water and add powder of 2 clove pods in it. Let it to be cool and drink; you will get relief from stomach gas and pain immediately.

12. Treats Indigestion:

Clove is used in different home remedies for curing digestive problems like- flatulence, diarrhea, nausea, indigestion etc.  Decoction (kadha) of laung and harad (black chebulic myrobalan) is very good to treat indigestion (ajirna). To prepare decoction-

  • Boil 2-3 clove pods and a piece of harad in a glass of water thoroughly.
  • Then add a pinch of rock salt in it and consume lukewarm after meals daily.

13. Chest Burning:

Grind 2 pods of clove and mix with 100 ml of water. Mix some mishri powder (rock sugar) in it and consume after sieving. It is a good home remedy of chest burning.

14. Cloves for Ear Pain:

Ear pain is a common problem; it may occur in all age group of person. Clove oil mixing with mustard oil will give you relief from ear pain within few minutes. Mix one drop of clove oil in some mustard oil and put one drop in the aching ear.

Clove oil is strong enough, so be careful and don’t apply it on children.

15. Cures Asthma:

Clove is a good spice for getting relief in respiratory health problems like asthma. Boil 5-6 cloves (laung) in half cup of water on low heat thoroughly. Let it to be cool and drink lukewarm with 1 spoon of honey (shahad). You can repeat it for 2-3 times in a day.

16. Cloves for Muscle Cramps:

To treat muscle cramps, apply 1-2 ml clove oil (laung ka tel) mixing with equal quantity of vinegar (sirka) on the affected area. It is an excellent remedial use of clove oil.

17. Cures Eye Sty (Guheri):

Clove for Eye Sty or guheriClove is a good disinfectant that works amazingly on eye sty (guheri) too.

  • Grind some cloves and make paste of them by adding some water.
  • Now apply a little paste on the sty and leave it to dry for few hours.
  • Now see the effect; it works surprisingly.
  • You can apply it twice a day. Clove has antimicrobial properties that helps to fasten the healing process naturally.

18. Remove Acne, Scars and Blemishes:

Aloevera

Clove (laung) has good potential to treat skin problems such as- acne, scars, blemishes etc. By applying clove oil directly on the affected areas, you can remove these skin problems. But because the clove oil is very strong, it is better to use under proper supervision.

It is better to apply clove oil on acne, scars or pimples, mixing with ‘multani mitti’ or aloevera gel.

19. Morning Sickness during Pregnancy:

In case of feeling nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, apply one drop of clove oil on the wrist of pregnant woman. Or Put 1-2 drop of clove oil (laung ka tel) on a cotton cloth or handkerchief and give it to inhale its smell.

20. Clove Oil for Wrinkles:

Clove oil is good to fight against wrinkles too. Give massage to your face at night with clove oil. Mix 1-2 clove oil drops in some aloevera gel or olive oil and massage your face gently with finger tips.

Side Effects of Clove or Laung:

Though laung or clove is an excellent spice that helps to cure many diseases without medicine. But too much of anything is not good for health. Clove is hot in nature and over consumption of it may cause some complications like intestinal bleeding, itching, sore or swollen throat, abdominal pain or rapid heartbeat. Therefore, be aware and ensure the amount before taking the cloves or clove oil. While applying on skin, it is better to apply clove oil by mixing with other oil. Similarly, if you are ingesting it, take it with water, milk or batasha.
