Tulsi or Basil Seeds:

Tulsi or Basil is a culinary herb of the family of mints. It is cultivated in India for more than 5000 of years. Tulsi or basil plant grows in rich and moist soil with ample sunlight. There are about 35 types of basil plant which differ in color and smell. But the most common types are sweet and holy basil. Sweet basil is prominently used in Italian cuisine. Holy basil is actually considered as sacred herb in India and used in almost all the religious rituals.

Basil plant generally has green leaves and brown stems. Though all the parts of basil- stems, roots, leaves and seeds- are useful for different purposes, but as a natural medicine, its leaves and seeds are used widely. Its important medicinal properties are anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, restorative and aromatic. Tulsi is rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, iron, magnesium, calcium and manganese. It is rich in anti-oxidants and has anti-aging properties too.

Tulsi is good for health and has been an important part of traditional remedies since ancient time. It is good for digestion and effective against internal bacteria. In addition, it is a mild sedative herb that is useful for lowering fever and relaxing stomach spasms. The leaves of basil work as a tonic and help to sharpen memory.

Major Health Benefits of Tulsi or Basil:

1. Good to Treat Pieria:

Anti-bacterial properties of basil leaves (tulsi patti) help to protect against harmful bacteria. It is great for over all dental health. If you are suffering from Pieria, brush your teeth with its leaves’ powder. Simply, dry some basil (tulsi) leaves in sunlight thoroughly for making powder to cure pieria.

2. Deworming of Kids:

Most recognized plant of Basil is good for deworming kids. You can give its juice to your child for deworming.

3. Low Back Pain:

Do you know, basil leaves (‘tulsi patti’) are natural pain killer. Regular consumption of basil leaves decoction (kadha) helps to control low back pain without medicine.

Prepare a decoction (kadha) of tulsi with ginger and black cardamom and use regularly at least  for 3-4 weeks; lower back pain will be cured completely.

5. Treats Influenza or Flu:

Basil tea with ginger and clove works effectively in case of influenza or flu; its antibiotic, anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties help to control fever.

For Basil Tea:

    • Boil 1 cup of water in a pan with some crushed ginger.
    • Add 7-9 basil (tulsi) leaves, 3-4 crushed black pepper, 1 clove (laung) in it.
    • After boiling like a tea, filter it and drink.
    • You can take it take it 3-4 times in a day.

Green cardamom or chhoti elaichiIn addition, you can give decoction (kadha) of tulsi with cardamom (elaichi) to control fever. Simply, boil 12-15 fresh leaves of tulsi with cardamom powder in half liter of water till it reduces half. Then drink it warm with honey (shahad) and milk (thrice a day); it will bring down the temperature within few minutes.

Not to mention, you can use powder of dry Tulsi in place of fresh leaves (1 tsp). But do not forget to put cold water strips on forehead of the patient together with it.

Tulsi ark also controls high fever. Give 1 tsp of its ark in high fever together with cold water strips.

6. Cures Cold and Cough:

a. Basil Leaves Decoction:

Basil leaves decoction (kadha) has been in use to alleviate coughing and cold since ancient times. You can make decoction of basil leaves with ginger (adrak) and black pepper (kali mirch) to get rid of cold.

b. Cold and cough among Kids:

Basil plant has mucus (phlegm) releasing properties. Its leaves work as natural antibiotic together with ginger and give good results to cure cold even in small kids too.

Similarly, tulsi leaves are used for prevention of cold among kids too. Rub its juice on nose, ear and forehead of child daily at night at the time of sleep.

7. Controls gas & Acidity:

Basil (tulsi) leaves are good for digestive health problems, such as- gas and acidity, too. By eating basil leaves (7-9) daily you can get relief in acidity.

8. Effective in Stomachache:

For curing stomach-ache, take 20-22 leaves of basil and grind them to make thick paste. Then apply this paste in and around the naval point. You will get relief in your stomach ache amazingly.

9. Cures Eyes Burning:

Eyes Burning is a common problem which is generally occurred due to continuous use of computer or electronic devices. Basil leaves ‘ark’ cures this burning easily.

  • To get relief from this eyes burning, take some ‘Shyama tulsi’ leaves and crush them thoroughly.
  • Now, extract the juice with the help of sieve or thin cotton cloth.
  • Put 2 drops of this ark in your eyes daily at night till required.

10. Joint Pain & Muscular Pain:

It is proved in some researches that Basil contains high quantities of beta-caryophyllene which is useful in treating arthritis.

Different Remedies of Tulsi for Joint Pain:

a. Every part of Tulsi is used to cure any type of joint pain. An excellent result of this natural remedy is with goat milk.

b. Take equal amount of basil roots, stems, leaves and seeds (manjari) in equal quantity and dry all of these in sunlight thoroughly. After drying, grind to make powder of them and keep it into an airtight jar. Use 6 gm of this powder with old jaggery (gur) daily. It controls inflammation and pain due to arthritis, gout and joint pain.

c. If you have nerve pain, use basil juice or Tulsi kadha. Simply, boil 12-15 basil leaves in one cup of water till it reduced to half and drink it twice or thrice a day. It controls nerve or muscles pain easily.

d. Make oil of basil leaves and apply on the affected area to cure pain. To make oil of basil (tulsi) leaves, boil some (20-25) leaves in 100 gm of mustard oil thoroughly and strain it. Give gentle massage with this oil 2 times a day or whenever you need it.

11. Cures Mouth Ulcers (Chhale):

For curing mouth ulcers, eat basil leaves; with a regular use of one week mouth ulcers or chhale will be disappeared.

12. Tulsi for Liver Diseases:

Tulsi is good for liver and used in treating conditions like hepatitis. Eat 10-12 leaves daily in the morning after washing with warm water. It strengthens liver naturally and makes you healthy. Only need to keep it continue with patience.

13. Good for Skin Problem:

Basil leaves can cure skin disorders, whether consumed or applied topically. To cure skin disease, apply tulsi ‘ark’ on affected area; it shows good results. You can also apply fresh leaves on affected area directly; it controls infection.

14. Cures Ear Pain:

Basil juice can cure ear pain without medication. Generally, children have faced the problem of ear pain. In that case, boil 10-12 leaves in some mustard oil (sarson ka tel) and mix some garlic (lahsun) juice in this oil. Let it to be cool and strain the oil into a jar. Pour 2-3 drops in ear to control pain.

15. Treats Dizziness or Vertigo:

To cure problem of vertigo or dizziness, take 1 tsp of basil leaves juice together with 1 tsp of honey. To extract basil juice, simply crush some basil leaves (12-15) and sieve by pressing with fingers. It is a good home remedy of vertigo.

16. Tulsi to cure Piles:

Basil can cure disease like piles (bawasir) which is most annoying. Its seeds (manjari) have medicinal properties and are used to control blood in piles.

17. Good for Swollen Throat:

Ginger and black pepper with tulsiBasil is also good for swollen throat glands. Decoction (kadha) of basil leaves, ginger and black pepper works as a great natural medicine of reducing throat glands swelling.

Basil seed (manjari of Tulsi) with rock salt is another cure of swollen throat glands that keeps you away from the harmful antibiotics.

18. Sore Throat:

To treat sore throat problem in a natural way, take decoction of basil leaves and black pepper.

19. Respiratory Problems:

Tulsi is also beneficial in treating respiratory health problems such as- chronic bronchitis, asthma etc. Use of basil leaves together with ginger and honey cures bronchitis, asthma, cold and cough.

Simply, crush some ginger and extract its juice by pressing with finger tips (1 tsp). Now mix 1 spoon honey in it and ingest immediately. This home remedy can also be applied on children but the dosage will be the half.

20. Removes Kidney Stone:

Tulsi helps in regulating uric acid levels in body; hence eliminates risks of developing kidney stones. It also helps in removing kidney stones.

To remove kidney stone, take 1 tsp of tulsi ‘ark’ with honey daily. If you want to avoid operation, use it regularly for 6 months. It helps to break the stone into small pieces and remove through urine.

21. Protects against Stress:

Recent researches have shown that the leaves of tulsi protect against stress significantly. Therefore, chew 12 leaves of basil twice daily for preventing stress. It is advisable even for healthier person too.



In short, basil or tulsi is the most important herb which has potential to cure various diseases without medication. But before using it, ensure its pureness. It should be grown organically in unpolluted environment because polluted area may contain twice the toxicity.

There is no side effect of this herb; however pregnant or lactating mother should avoid it. Similarly, excessive use may cause acidity; so ensure its dosage before use.

Though all the ingredients used in above said natural remedies have no side effect, but if it does not suit you, stop it immediately. It is better to consult your doctor before use.

  10. Tulsi is a calming herb that produces relaxation effects. However, on its own tulsi does not induce drowsiness or sleep.
