Diabetes or Madhumeh:
Diabetes (madhumeh) is a metabolic disease in which person has high blood glucose or blood sugar. It is a endocrine disease commonly found in elderly persons. It results from an absolute lack of insulin (a hormone made by beta cells in the pancreas) which leads to abnormalities in metabolism.
Symptoms & Causes:
Main symptoms of diabetes are frequent urination and feeling very hungry and thirsty most of the time, even after eating every now and then. Other symptoms are extreme fatigue (both physical and mental), weight loss, blurry vision, slow healing of cuts and bruises, constipation, numbness and tingling in the hands and feet.
Diabetes (madhumeh) is characterized by an elevated level of blood glucose and by the excretion of excess glucose in the urine. It is a complex group of diseases which has variety of causes. There is two types of diabetes Type -1 and Type-2. Type 1 diabetes is caused by the immune system destroying the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Whereas Type-2 diabetes is linked with obesity, sedentary lifestyle, family history, old age, and faulty diet. The risk of having type 2 diabetes increases with the age; it is most common form of diabetes.
Diabetes is a serious disease; if it is not treated timely it may result abnormally high sugar (or glucose) level in body. It needs regular monitoring because adequate control of blood sugar level leads to lower risk of complications. If this blood sugar level is not monitored, it may result in serious complications like- kidney failure, heart disease, and blindness.
Treatment of Type-1 diabetes is medication (like- insulin) only; there is no other preventive measure of this type of diabetes. However, type-2 diabetes can be prevented by taking precautions like- weight control, regular exercise, and diet control. Some natural home remedies are also effective to control the blood sugar level of the diabetics.
Home Remedies to Control Diabetes (Madhumeh):
1. Amla & Turmeric for Diabetes:
a. To control type 2 diabetes, take equal amount of (5-5 gm) Indian gooseberry (Amla) powder and turmeric (haldi) powder with water daily (morning & evening). Amla and turmeric powder have lots of medicinal properties that can even cure chronic diabetes.
b. In the same way, Indian gooseberry can also be used with bitter gourd (karela) juice. Simply, mix 1 tbsp of amla juice in a half cup of bitter gourd juice and ingest. By taking it regularly for two months, you can reduce blood sugar level.
2. Fenugreek Seeds for Diabetes:
Fenugreek seed is very good to control blood sugar; results of an study published in the ‘International Journal of Research in Ayurveda’ proved its significance. (3)
Soak 10 gm fenugreek seeds (methi dana) in half cup of water overnight and drink it in the morning after grinding and sieving the seeds with water.
3. Bitter Gourd Juice to Control Sugar:
Bitter gourd juice works amazingly in controlling diabetes. As per recent researches, bitter gourd (or bitter melon) contains a hypoglycaemic or insulin like principle which is important to reduce the blood and urine sugar levels. (1, 2)
Therefore, drink 10 gm of bitter gourd (karela) juice daily in the morning to control sugar level. You can extract juice with the help of juicer. But if you have not juicer, grind the bitter gourd in mixer grinder after cutting in small pieces. Then, sieve it with the help of cotton cloth. However, you can increase dose as per your sugar level.
4. Cinnamon to Control Sugar:
Cinnamon (dalchini) is a type of spice that works amazingly to cure diabetes. Simply, soak 1 gm of cinnamon powder in a cup of water at night; blend it thoroughly with water in the morning and drink it (if possible) empty stomach.
5. Indian Blackberry Leaves:
Fruits and leaves of Indian blackberry (Jambolan or Jamun) are useful to control diabetes. Take some fresh leaves of Indian blackberry and grind it with water after cleaning. Strain the juice and drink twice a day.
6. Tulsi, Neem & Bel Tree Leaves:
Leaves of Tulsi (basil), Neem (Azadirachta indica) and Bel (quince) work positively to control blood sugar level in most of the cases of diabetes.
- At first, dry some leaves of Tulsi, neem and bel in sunshine.
- Then, take equal amount of all the three dry leaves and grind them to make fine powder.
- Store this powder in an airtight jar.
- Now, take 5 gm of this powder with water two times in a day. You can increase or decrease dosage as per requirement according to sugar level.
7. Ajwain (Carom seeds) for Diabetes:
Carom seed or Ajwain also works well to treat diabetes. You can take it with different combinations.
A. Ajwain with Neem Leaves:
Collect some Neem (Azadirachta Indica) leaves, clean with water and dry in sunlight. After drying, grind the leaves to make powder and store into a jar.
- Take black cumin seeds and carom seeds (ajwain) in equal quantity, slightly roast on a pan (tawa) over heat.
- Then grind both the ingredients separately, mix well and store into a jar.
- Now, ingest 1 tsp of neem leaves powder and ½ tsp of carom and cumin seeds powder with warm milk at night daily.
- Follow this remedy regularly for 4-5 weeks, then check the blood sugar level.
B. Ajwain with Fenugreek Seeds (Methi):
If ajwain is taken along with fenugreek (methi) seeds and black cumin seeds (Kala jeera), diabetes can be controlled amazingly.
Carom Seeds 100 gm
Fenugreeek Seeds 200 gm
Black Cumin Seeds 50 gm
At first, roast all the three ingredients slightly in a pan over heat and grind one by one to make fine powder. Then mix well and store into a jar. Consume 1 tsp of this powder at night before going to sleep. It will certainly help you to control blood sugar level and other stomach related problems. While using this home remedy, use of alcohol and tobacco is not permitted.
8. Soybean, Barley (Jau) & Gram Flour:
Do you know, use of flour for ‘Chapati’ they eat, affects the sugar level of diabetics. However, wheat (gehun) flour is not healthy for diabetics. So, eat chapati of mix flour of Soybean, Barley (Jau) & Gram (chana); it helps to reduce sugar level naturally in Diabetes.
9. Grapes & Tomato Juice:
Use of grapes (angoor) and tomato (tamatar) juice in daily diet also help to reduce sugar level in diabetics. However, the quantity of the juice may vary according to requirement; start with 10 gm juice and increase according your sugar level. Though grapes are high in glucose and fructose, but they are rich in minerals, vitamins, fibre, and other nutrients. Therefore, even doctors suggest grapes in small quantity as a part of the diabetic diet.
Likewise, drinking of 1 cup of tomato juice daily can control type 2 diabetes. Tomato has low glycemic index and helps to reduce risk of developing heart disease by improving blood platelet activity.
10. Walking for Sugar Control:
Most important natural remedy of diabetes is walking. Minimum 5 km daily walk is as essential as food and water; though distance (kilometer) may vary according to age and sugar level but it is must.
11. Diet to Control Diabetes:
Diet plays an important role in controlling sugar. So, eat green and fibrous vegetables to control sugar level. Avoid, non- veg. food, oily food, sweet drinks, sweets and sweet fruits also.
All the above natural remedies are effective and have no side effect. But monitoring is more important. Therefore check your sugar level regularly and if not controlled consult your doctor.
