Diabetes (madhumeh) is a metabolic disease in which person has high blood glucose or blood sugar. It is a endocrine disease commonly found in elderly persons. It results from an absolute lack of insulin (a hormone made by beta cells in the pancreas) which leads to abnormalities in metabolism.
Diabetes is a most common disease at present. Main symptoms of diabetes are frequent urination and feeling very hungry and thirsty most of the time, even after eating every now and then. Other symptoms are extreme fatigue (both physically and mentally), weight loss, blurry vision, slow healing of cuts and bruises, constipation, numbness and tingling in the hands and feet.
Diabetes (madhumeh) is characterized by an elevated level of blood glucose and by the excretion of excess glucose in the urine. It is a complex group of diseases which has variety of causes. There is two types of diabetes Type -1 and Type-2. Type 1 diabetes is caused by the immune system destroying the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Whereas Type-2 diabetes is linked with obesity, sedentary lifestyle, family history, old age, and faulty diet. The risk of having type 2 diabetes increases with the age; it is most common form of diabetes.
Diabetes (madhumeh) is a serious disease; if it is not treated timely it may result abnormally high sugar (or glucose) level in body. It needs regular monitoring because adequate control of blood sugar level leads to lower risk of complications. If this blood sugar level is not monitored, it may result in serious complications like- kidney failure, heart disease, and blindness.
Type-1 diabetes can be treated only by medication like insulin; there is no other preventive measure of this type of diabetes. However, type-2 diabetes can be prevented by taking precautions like- weight control, regular exercise, and diet control. Some natural home remedies are also effective to control the blood sugar level of the diabetics.
Home Remedies to Control Diabetes (Madhumeh):
1. Amla & Turmeric Powder for Diabetes:
Indian gooseberry or amla is an important fruit for diabetics because of its high vitamin- C content. If you are suffering from type 2 diabetes, you can cure it by Indian gooseberry and turmeric (haldi). Simply, take equal amount of (5-5 gm) Indian gooseberry (Amla) powder and turmeric (haldi) powder with water daily (morning & evening). Amla and turmeric powder have lots of medicinal properties. It can even cure chronic diabetes (madhumeh). There is no side effect of this home remedy.
Another remedy of amla is with the combination of bitter gourd juice. One table spoon of amla juice mixing with half cup of bitter gourd juice (karela) taken daily for two months reduces blood sugar level.
2. Fenugreek Seeds to Control Sugar Level:
To control blood sugar level of the diabetics (madhumeh rogi), fenugreek seeds are an excellent natural medicine. Our ancestors also used this home remedy before thousands of year back. It is very simple to use.
Soak 10 gm fenugreek seeds (methi dana) in half cup of water overnight and drink it in the morning after grinding and sieving the seeds with water.
3. Bitter Gourd (Karela) Juice for Diabetes:
Bitter gourd juice is also an effective and safe home remedy for diabetes. Results of recent researches proved that bitter gourd contains a hypoglycaemic or insulin like principle which is important to reduce the blood and urine sugar levels.
Simply, drink 10 gm of bitter gourd juice (karela) daily in the morning. You can extract juice with the help of juicer; if you have not juicer, cut the bitter gourd in small pieces after cleaning with water and grind it into mixer grinder and sieve. Dose can be increased as per sugar level.
Taking bitter gourd juice directly may cause acidity; if it is so, add one tomato and one cucumber with bitter gourd and extract juice of all the three veggies.
4. Cinnamon (dalchini) to Control Sugar:
Cinnamon (dalchini) is a type of spice that works amazingly in diabetes. Simply soak 1 gm of cinnamon (dalchini) powder in a cup of water at night; blend it thoroughly with water in the morning and drink it (if possible) empty stomach. It is most effective home remedy to control blood sugar level.
5. Indian Blackberry Leaves:
Indian blackberry (Jambolan or Jamun) is a type of fruit that has lots of health benefits. Its fruit and leaves- both are useful to control diabetes. Use of fresh leaves of Indian blackberry (Jamun) controls blood sugar level in Diabetics. Take some leaves of Indian blackberry and grind it with water after cleaning. Strain the juice and drink twice a day.
6. Tulsi (Basil), Neem & Quince (Bel) Leaves:
Leaves of Tulsi (basil), Neem (Azadirachta indica) and Bel (quince) work positively to control blood sugar level in most of the cases of diabetes (madhumeh).
- Firstly dry some leaves of basil, azadirachta indica or neem and quince (bel) in sunshine.
- Then take equal amount of all the three dry leaves and grind them to make fine powder.
- Store this powder in an air tight jar.
- Take 5 gm of powder twice a day with water. You can increase or decrease dosage as per requirement according to sugar level.
7. Soybean, Barley (Jau) & Gram Flour:
Use of flour of chapatti they eat, affects the sugar level of diabetics. Wheat (gehun) flour is not healthy for diabetics; eat chapatti of mix flour of Soybean, Barley (Jau) & Gram (chana) it helps to reduce sugar level naturally in Diabetes.
8. Grapes Juice & Ripe Tomato Juice for Diabetes:
Use of grapes (angoor) and tomato (tamatar) juice in daily diet also help to reduce sugar level in diabetics (madhumeh rogi). Quantity of the juice may vary according to requirement; start with 10 gm juice and increase according your sugar level. Though grapes are high in glucose and fructose, but they are rich in minerals, vitamins, fibre, and other nutrients. Therefore, even doctors suggest grapes (angoor) in small quantity as a part of the diabetic diet because of its health benefits.
Likewise, tomato (tamatar) juice may provide some good health benefits; drinking 1 cup of tomato juice is beneficial for type 2 diabetes. Tomato has low glycemic index and helps to reduce risk of developing heart disease by improving blood platelet activity.
9. Walking to Control Sugar Level:
Most important natural remedy of diabetes is walking. Minimum 5 km daily walk is as essential as food and water; distance (kilometer) may vary according to age and sugar level but it is must. It is the best natural therapy to control blood sugar level.
10. Diet to Control Diabetes:
Avoid, non- veg. food, oily food, sweet drinks, sweets and sweet fruits also. Eat green and fibrous vegetables to control sugar level naturally.
