Health Benefits of Giloy/Guduchi

Giloy or Guduchi (Tinospora Cordifolia in English) is an important medicinal plants of India which is popular as queen of herbs. In Ayurveda, it is considered as one of the three Amrit (nectar) plants that proves to be a medicine of all types of diseases. Therefore, it is also popular with the name of Amrita or ‘Amritvalli’; its other names are- Gulancha, Amrita, Amritavallari, Garham, Garum, Batindu, Gulancha etc. 

Giloy or Tinospora cordifolia

Giloy/guduchi is astringent, bitter and pungent in taste; its leaves are rich in calcium, protein and phosphorus. Likewise, stems of guduchi have starch in excess. In fact, it is anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, anti-diabetic and anti-bacterial herb that is used in various medicines whether it is Ayurvedic, Unani, or bio-chemic. One of the best characteristics of this plant is that whichever tree it climbs, it gets the properties of that tree. 

Guduchiy or Tinospora Cordifolia is a type of natural drug which has a capacity to treat various diseases caused by ‘vata, pitta and kapha’. It works as an immunity booster. It also helps to cure diseases related to lungs, liver, bones and blood.

Health Benefits of Giloy (Tinospora Cordifolia):

1. Boosts Immunity:

Guduchi is a universal herb that is powerhouse of antioxidants; it works as an immunity booster and improves body’s defense mechanism. In fact, it keeps the causes of diseases, especially viral diseases away from the body by increasing the antibody-producing cells.

2. Giloy for Diabetes:

Giloy is a boon for diabetic patients that helps in lowering blood sugar level. Its alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, saponins and cardiac glycosides are the major phytoconstituents of Tinospora cordifolia; these phytoconstituents have been reported to play an anti-diabetic role. (1) It helps in the production of insulin and enhances the capacity to burn glucose. Therefore, diabetic people should take juice of its stem (2 inches) and a leaf of bael plant with a little amount of turmeric daily.

3. Brings Down Fever:

Guduchi has mild anti-pyretic effects that helps to get rid of chronic fever, especially intermittent fever. If a person is suffering from any type of fever for a long time and has no relief even after getting a lot of medicines, he should take giloy daily. However, it only helps in bringing down the fever, therefore take it with other drugs to get rid of the associated infections. It is also beneficial to cover up the weakness or loss of energy due to fever. You can use guduchi in different ways:

  1. Simply, boil a stem of giloy (4-5 inches) in a glass of water until it becomes half.
  2. Or make its decoction with basil leaves (4-5 leaves) and consume with a pinch of black pepper powder.
  3. You can also boil coriander seeds (1tsp), neem bark (1 piece) with guduchi stem (4-5 inches long) in a glass of water till it becomes half and consume with a pinch of black pepper powder. You can also add some jaggery or honey in it for taste.

4. Good for Blood Platelets:

Giloy’s leaves can improve blood platelets count due to dengue fever. If you are having such problem, take its leaves juice with pomegranate, aloe vera and papaya leaves juice. It is believed that guduchi juice with ghee or honey also helps to maintain hemoglobin level in the body.

5. Giloy for Respiratory Diseases:

Giloy, also called Amritbel, is good to treat respiratory diseases such as bronchitis, asthma, cold and chronic cough too. It has an anti allergic effect that works against symptoms like running nose, sneezing and congestion. Extract its juice and consume daily till required. If you are asthmatic, chew a bit of giloy root for getting relief in symptoms of asthma.

6. Giloy for Digestive Disorders:

Giloy is very good to fight against digestive disorders like- acidity, gastritis, loss of appetite, dyspepsia, worm infestations etc. Actually, guduchi ‘satwa’ is beneficial in all types of ‘Pitta’ disorders. With a regular consumption of half gram giloy powder with amla powder, you can get rid of all type of digestive problems completely. 

By taking Tinospora Cordifolia (guduchi) along with asparagus (shatawar), you can cure indigestion problem completely. Simply, grind some giloy and asparagus together and boil in a glass of water till it becomes half. Then sieve the decoction and consume twice a day.

In the same way, people, who are suffering from piles (bawasir), can also have guduchi juice with buttermilk.

7. Guduchi for Skin Diseases:

Guduchi is very good for skin. It helps to purify the blood by removing toxins from the body and makes the skin flawless and shiny. If you use it regularly, you can even keep the wrinkles away. Its anti aging properties helps in reducing wrinkles, dark spots, fine lines and pimples.

In addition, its oil is used to treat skin diseases. Decoction of giloy helps to cure all types of skin diseases like – Psoriasis, Leucoderma, Ringworm, dermatitis, sunburn etc. For better results, take its decoction with some clarified butter (ghee) in the morning on an empty stomach. In the same way, use of giloy with guggul is very common for curing ringworm.

8. Guduchi for Joint Pain:

Giloy is an excellent herb that is quite effective in gout, arthritis and even in fever like- Chikungunia; it removes swelling and controls joint pain. Its extracts have been reported to induce a significant increase in the thickness of joint cartilage. (2) It can be taken in the form of juice or powder. Or you can prepare its decoction, add some castor oil (10-20 ml) and consume. Giloy (stem) powder with milk works well in gout. Simply, boil some giloy root with milk, add some ginger powder and a pinch of turmeric and consume. Similarly, for rheumatoid arthritis, one should take giloy with ginger.

9. Giloy for Heart Health:

Giloy is good for cardiac health too; it acts as a cardio protective agent. Regular consumption of giloy along with black pepper will help to clear the arteries.

10. Stress and anxiety

Giloy is considered as an excellent herb for mental health; its calming effect helps in managing stress and anxiety. Take guduchi stem powder daily. If it is taken with asparagus (shatawar), it can help to boost up the memory and cognitive functions too.

11. Guduchi for Sexual Health

Giloy is known for its aphrodisiac benefits. In Ayurveda, it is used to treat different sexual health problems such as- impotence, premature ejaculation etc. It is an excellent herb to treat premature ejaculation.

12. Tinospora Cordifolia for Vision:

To improve vision (eyesight), take Tinospora Cordifolia (giloy) juice with amla (Indian gooseberry) juice daily. Or make a decoction of Tinospora Cordifolia with Triphla powder and consume with some Peepal tree leaves powder and honey (twice a day). 

Giloy leaves also gives relief in burning eyes; boil its leaves in water. Once it cools down, apply over your eyelids.

13. Guduchi to Treat UTI:

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a disease of kidneys, bladder and urethra and guduchi is a strong diuretic. It helps to manage all types of urinary infections such as cystitis and pyelonephritis. To cure urine infection, consume guduchi juice on an empty stomach with some honey.

14. Giloy for Weight Loss:

Giloy leaves are good to get rid of obesity too. You can control your weight by taking giloy with triphla powder and honey (once or twice a day). 

Or you can try decoction of giloy leaves, amla and baheda for getting rid of obesity. Simply, boil 4-5 leaves of giloy in a glass of water; at the same time add amla powder and baheda (½ spoon each) and some turmeric in the boiling water. With the regular consumption of this decoction, one can get rid of obesity.

15. Giloy for Liver Health:

Giloy protects liver and fights against liver diseases like- Jaundice, fatty liver and Hepatitis. This amazing herb not only prevents scarring of liver but also stimulates the regeneration of damaged tissues. Moreover, regular consumption of its extract may prove to be very beneficial, especially when it is taken with aloe vera juice or wheat grass juice.

Giloy can detoxify your liver too; if you have fatty liver, consume its juice regularly.

In the same manner, leaves of giloy with buttermilk can treat jaundice; simply grind some leaves, mix in a glass of buttermilk and drink in the morning.

Or you can take a spoonful powder of giloy and triphla for jaundice; add some honey and a pinch of black pepper powder in it and consume.

16. Feet Burning Sensation:

For feet burning sensation, mix giloy juice with neem leaves and amla and make a decoction. Take it at least two or three times daily; it will remove the burning sensation of the feet and hands.

17. Tinospora Cordifolia for Ear Pain:

If you have pain in your ears, juice of giloy leaves will give you relief. Extract the juice of its leaves and put it on the aching ear lukewarm. 

18. Giloy for Blood Circulation:

Diuretic properties of guduchi act as a detox for your body system. It helps to purify blood and improve blood circulation; take its juice with amla juice regularly.
